ANCIENT WISDOMYOGA

During my Yoga Teacher Training, we engaged in a powerful meditation by chanting "om" 108 times using mala beads. This practice helped ground our focus and ushered us into a serene state of mind. At first, I felt distracted by counting each bead with my fingers, but I eventually sank into a journey toward inner peace. By the end, I felt more relaxed. My mind was blank.
Yet a question suddenly came to mind: why 108 beads, and why 108 mantra chants?
I learned that the number 108 holds a special place in various spiritual traditions, particularly in Hinduism and Buddhism. It represents a rich tapestry of meanings and connections to the universe. Yoga has woven this into its practices to deepen our spiritual journeys and foster mindfulness.
The Deep Significance of 108
In many Eastern traditions, the number 108 is seen as sacred and complete. For example, Hinduism recognizes 108 sacred texts and identifies 108 energy lines, called nadis, that converge at the heart chakra. In Buddhism, 108 symbolizes the delusions and distractions that one must overcome to reach enlightenment.
Mathematically, 108 is fascinating, too. You can derive it by multiplying the first three numbers (1 x 2 x 3). If you add its digits (1 + 0 + 8), you get 9—a number laden with cultural significance.
Connecting the Dots: 108 in Daily Life
The relevance of 108 extends beyond spiritual practices; it invites us to embrace life's cycles. Just as the seasons change, so do our experiences. Recognizing this rhythm can help us appreciate growth and transformation.
Contemplating the number 108 reminds us of our interconnectedness. It encourages us to be mindful in our choices, interactions, and experiences, deepening our awareness of our place in the world.
Practical Activity: Cultivating Mindfulness with 108
To integrate the power of 108 into your daily life, consider this simple yet profound activity:
1. Find Your Space: Choose a quiet place where you can sit comfortably without distractions.
2. Set Your Intention: Before you begin, take a moment to think about what you want to release or let go of—perhaps a negative thought or a distraction.
3. Chant or Breathe: Using a mala bead necklace (or even just your fingers as a guide), chant "om" 108 times. If you don't have mala beads, simply count on your fingers.
4. Focus on Each Bead or Finger: As you count each chant, visualize yourself letting go of your intention. With each "om," imagine releasing the burden and inviting peace into your heart.
5. Reflect: After completing the 108 chants, take a few moments to sit in silence. Notice how you feel physically and emotionally. Write down any insights you gained during this practice.
