On my recent visit to Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha, I discovered the Cambodian Monastery—a hidden gem among the many international temples. The entrance is a reminder of Angkor Wat's historical importance. The temple's architecture is very elaborate and rich in colors. Inside, you will find intricate paintings and one of the most creative Buddha altars I’ve seen — including a tree!

My journey to the Cambodian Monastery in Lumbini was inspired by my deep connection to Cambodia. I had previously spent time at monasteries there, immersing myself in Vipassana retreats and falling in love with the country—the warmth and friendliness of its people, and the breathtaking beauty of Angkor Wat, which inspired me in so many ways.

My path here was guided by a Cambodian Venerable Monk from Phnom Penh, the capital city of Cambodia. Bhante Justin, who became a teacher and mentor to me, encouraged me to visit Lumbini and graciously connected me with the Abbot of this monastery.

A Labor of Love, Built Brick by Brick

The story of the Cambodian Monastery is one of patience and perseverance. Construction began in 2006, driven by the dreams of Cambodian architects and the hopes of the faithful. After 12 years of meticulous work—slowed not only by the intricacy of its design but also by limited funds—the monastery opened its doors in 2018. Today, it is regarded as one of the most beautiful monasteries in all of Lumbini, a living canvas of Cambodian artistry set in the sacred land of Nepal.

Funded by the Generosity of Visitors and Private Donors

Unlike many other monasteries in Lumbini, the Cambodian Monastery receives NO government funding. Every brick, every statue, every flourish of paint inside its halls exists thanks to the kindness of private individuals. Even the stunning murals that adorn its walls were made possible through the generosity of donors.

The abbot and a small team of about ten dedicated local staff are the only ones to maintain this sanctuary—they keep the monastery as clean as possible and the gardens flourishing. Monks visit from time to time, but the Abbot is currently the sole resident, making external support more vital than ever.

The Unique Importance of Buddhist Monasteries

Among the world’s sacred spaces, Buddhist monasteries hold a special place. These serene enclaves are more than just places of worship—they are vibrant communities where monks and nuns live, study, and practice together. Monasteries serve as centers of meditation, discipline, and spiritual inquiry, preserving teachings that emphasize peace, compassion, and mindfulness.

But their influence extends far beyond their residents. Buddhist monasteries welcome laypeople seeking guidance, wisdom, or simply a respite from the noise of daily life. Through public teachings, retreats, and acts of service, these communities share their insights with the wider world, offering tools for personal growth and societal harmony. By supporting Buddhist monasteries, we ensure these traditions continue to illuminate the path for future generations.

How You Can Support This Sacred Place

The Cambodian Monastery survives—and thrives—on the goodwill of visitors and donors. Here’s how you can make a difference:

  • Visit and Connect: Experience the monastery's serene beauty and have a heartfelt conversation with the abbot. Your presence alone is a form of support.

  • Stay at the Monastery: Instead of booking a hotel, consider stayingat the Monastery. Accommodation is donation-based, offering a unique and peaceful experience beyond the typical traveler’s path.

  • Make a Donation: Contributions can be made at the temple or directly to the monastery. Every bit helps, from daily upkeep to the creation of sacred art.

  • Get Involved: There are many more ways to help. Whether you wish to sponsor a room (with your name on it), a garden, a mural, or another aspect of this spiritual haven, the opportunities are endless.

To make a donation or to sponsor a room, garden, or mural, you can contribute in person at the temple or contact the Abbot or Manager directly. For specific donation instructions or sponsorship options, please reach out via WhatsApp at +977 970 380 7702 or +977 984 705 3848 for guidance on the process.

Personal Note

While I am sharing my personal experience with the Cambodian Monastery, it's important to note that many other worthy projects and monasteries throughout Lumbini also rely on community support.

There are countless opportunities to make a positive impact in Lumbini (including the neighbouring ancient city of Kapilvastu, which I wrote about), and every contribution helps maintain this sacred place for generations to come.

I encourage you not only to do your own research—whether it's learning about the Lumbini Development Trust or exploring the work of other monasteries in the area—but also to actively engage, contribute, and make your own unique impact on this remarkable spiritual landscape.
